WASHINGTON, July 4 (DC Times Online) — Washington’s National Mall is the center of America250 celebrations this holiday weekend, but extreme heat has already forced organizers to close the Great American State Fair for several hours and cancel the city’s Independence Day parade.
Officials and event organizers said the heat posed a health risk as temperatures neared 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The National Weather Service advised visitors to drink water, take shade or air-conditioning breaks, check on seniors and other vulnerable people, and seek medical attention quickly if heat illness appears.
The Fourth of July programming in the capital includes a planned speech by President Donald Trump and a fireworks display over the city. Trump has described the holiday as one of the most extraordinary days in the history of the world and promised a large fireworks show.
The Washington events are part of a broader semiquincentennial marked by celebrations across the country. Philadelphia canceled its Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade because of the heat, while New York City opened cooling centers and sent workers and volunteers to check on homeless residents.
For travelers, the practical takeaway is that holiday crowds, park access and event schedules in Washington can change quickly as the heat continues, especially around the National Mall and other federal monument areas.
